Interview with a Pro: Wedding Photos
I talked to professional wedding photographer extraordinaire, Jessica Hill, to get the inside scoop on engagement and wedding photography. She gave some great tips… so I’ll share!
New and Blue: What should couples be looking for specifically when deciding on a wedding photographer?
Jessica Hill: Couples should look for someone that they feel a personal connection with. Obviously, you should love their work as well, but if you’re uncomfortable with the person photographing you the photos might reveal that.
NB: What tips can you give about attire or makeup for the couple for their engagement photo shoot?
JH: I strongly discourage couples to wear patterns. If the couple sticks with solid colors the photos will stand out and look great! If you can get an outfit change in, I think it’s a great idea as well because it gives such a different look and variety. I usually recommend my clients wear jeans and t’s or sweaters for one look, and then switch it up half-way and change to a skirt or heels and for the guy, a dress shirt and tie. Moms like these too. J
NB: Are there any new photography styles or specific photo opportunities that you’re hearing about?
JH: Yes - all the time! Fusion is getting really big right now, which is the combination of photography and video. Also Boudoir photography is really hot right now. I call the Boudoir photos, Peek-a-Boo shoots and it’s so much fun! I highly recommend it!
NB: How can the engaged couple contribute to make the photographs look timeless, so they won’t look dated in a few years?
JH: I always love detail-oriented brides who choose specific details and props. For instance, if the photographer is getting a shot of the dress hanging up, think about the hanger that it’s on. Is there a wood hanger around that won’t date itself 20 years, as opposed to a plastic one? The style of a wedding is a great way to assert your identity as a couple and I’ve noticed a lot of vintage themed weddings lately, which always makes for timeless photos.
NB: If a couple has specific ideas on backgrounds, poses, or style – what is the best way to tell the photographer without offending them?
JH: Communicate. I have a lot of clients give me their huge files of photos and they say, “I really like these.” Tell me what you like about these: what type of lighting are you drawn to? What poses do you think you look great in? A nice way to approach this is to ask the photographer if they mind looking at a few of their favorite poses, locations, etc. It should ultimately be helpful for the photographer to know what you are drawn to in a photo.
NB: Any additional tips or tricks we should know about?
JH: Stay positive on your wedding day! If the cake doesn’t look like it should and you’re upset about it - your facial expression could reflect this. Take a deep breath and think about how you’re marrying your best friend… and smile!
